How Does NSI® Valerian Root Complex work? Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant with dark green pointed leaves and small white, light pink and purple flowers. Its root has traditionally been used for centuries as a sleep aid and for relief from nervousness, restlessness and stress-related anxiety. Valerian is believed to help with calming benefits by increasing the amount of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter that regulates sleep cycles, available in the synaptic cleft. In vitro study results have shown that valerian extract may cause GABA to be released from brain nerve endings, then block GABA from being taken back into nerve cells. Valerian extracts contain GABA in quantities believed to be sufficient enough to produce calming effects. Valerian may improve the amount of time required to fall asleep, enhance overall sleep quality and lessen the number of times an individual awakens during the night¹. In addition to promoting healthy sleep, valerian has also been reported to help ease feelings of restlessness and anxiety, as GABA also regulates brain excitability. Some Herbalists recommend taking valerian for four to six weeks, then taking a break for two weeks to see if sleep has improved. Dosages should be taken 30 to 45 minutes before bedtime. First-time users, or those taking valerian during the day, should start with smaller doses to determine what amount produces the desired effects. NSI® Valerian Root Complex is better because it: Contains 1,020 mg of Valerian Root Complex, with 220 mg of valerian root standardized to 0.8% valerenic acids. Is an all-natural solution to obtaining a good night's rest. ¹ Leathwood PD, Chauffard F, Heck E, Munoz-Box R.
